Social Commentary Memes
Within this project, students will explore the relationships between the arts, social commentary and very popular memes. You will make efforts to increase your understanding of the significant role that some artists choose to play in raising public awareness about global concerns such as the environment and our climate crisis, sustainability, human rights, politics and social values. The over-arching goal is to explore this relationship in your own work, and to incorporate intelligent social commentary into art projects.
Pre-test questions:
1. Describe the meaning of the word "social".
2. Describe the meaning of the word "Commentary".
3. What is a meme?
*When checking in, write the answers to these three introductory questions.
This will be a Group Project.
Objective: Students will create through photography, Photoshop and Indesign how to create a meme and connect the message to the visual. They will convey an opinion and belief about a social and/or global concern through visual and text.
